Description

The “Phase 3” facelift was unveiled for the 916 GTV and Spider in 2003, but was actually only available in the dealerships for a few short months before production officially ceased in late 2004. The striking design was penned by the experts at Pininfarina, with its prominent new grille and offset number plate mirroring that of the revised 147 and 156 models. Fewer than 2000 Phase 3 Spiders were ever built, and less than 500 of these offered the steering wheel on the right-hand side. Drilling down into the numbers even further; only 65 of these scant RHD cars were ever delivered in black livery.

This is a very rare opportunity indeed, then.

This example has covered 116k miles, although it wears it very well both cosmetically and, after we’ve treated it some attention, mechanically. The bodywork is unusually straight and dent-free for a 916 (see video above) and the Dark Tan Momo leather interior (a beautifully tasteful shade only available on these Phase 3 cars) has aged remarkably well. Inside the timeless cabin, everything works as intended - including the original head unit it left the factory with and, of course, the all-important electric hood.

It has amassed a wealth of service history including 13 stamps, each courtesy of either a main Alfa Romeo dealership or a respected independent specialist. Further bolstering this provenance are receipts for a new radiatior 16k miles ago, new ignition coils in the last 8k miles and it has covered less than 2k miles since being treated to a new brake caliper and handbrake cables. Preparing it for sale here at italicar, we have also replaced the cambelt, clutch master cylinder, all brake lines, an inner cv gaiter and fitted refurbished rear spring pan arms with polycarbonate bushes (wear on these components is a very common issue with all 916 cars, and can ruin the drive of the car). We’ve also treated it to a full Dinitrol anti-corrosion treatment to the underside to protect it.

If you’re looking for a Phase 3 Spider here in the UK, it can feel like searching for the proverbial needle in the haystack. How long will you have to wait before you see another one like this, with all the big jobs taken care of and ready to enjoy in the sunshine?
